Empowering mothers with the knowledge, tools and connections necessary to navigate the challenges of parenting their anxious teen so they can provide a nurturing environment for their child's growth, well-being and recovery from anxiety.

ENROLMENT CLOSES IN..

Is your teen's anxiety taking a toll on you?

Being a mother of an anxious teen can often feel like navigating unchartered waters as it brings with it a number of challenges and struggles such as:

Finding ways to communicate with your teen about their anxiety, alongside finding the right balance between providing support and giving your teen space.

Concerns about whether you are doing enough or whether you are somehow responsible for your teen's anxiety can lead to questionning your parenting skills.

Juggling the demands of being a Mum; keeping up all that daily family life brings alongside the stuff you need to do outside of home such as managing your job, caring for wider family members.

Navigating the vast amount of information available on anxiety and finding resources tailored to your specific needs and the needs of your teen.

Accessing appropriate help for your teen. It is common to be confronted by barriers such as unsympathetic or inflexible staff at your teen's school, limited availability of specialist professionals, long wait times or inability to access Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services or difficulty finding the right fit for your teen. It may be that your teen is saying they don't even want help.

No wonder it is common for Mums of anxious teens to feel overwhelmed!

worried.png

..when your child was young you could make almost everything better with a hug, you knew just what to do...and it worked, most of the time.

..when you were unsure, you sought the advice of other Mum's, they understood.

But now anxiety is present you find yourself unsure of what to do for the best or where to seek the right support to find out.

.....you have researched and accessed lots and lots of information and advice about anxiety

You seek ways to best support and help your teen so they can start enjoying their life once more .........

.....but find yourself overwhelmed and still at a loss as to what to do for the best or where to turn for the advice you need.

As a result you find yourself confronted with a sense of isolation

Have you wondered why it so hard for you to help you teen?

When you first noticed your teen had become moody and withdrawn, not wanting to go engage so much in activities you probably mentioned the situation to family and friends. You found they suggested this was just normal teenage stuff and it would work out okay in the end. You hoped this would be a phase, teenagers can be difficult, right? (thinking Kevin and Perry!).

You were patient, you tried to carry on as usual trying all the things that have worked in the past.

You have reassured your teen, saying “it will be okay” but your teen (and you) know it isn’t really. They tell you "you don't understand". You would love to understand if only they would let you know what's going on!

You have encouraged your teen, saying “you can do it, you’ve done it before”. Your teen tells you they can’t, but not why! You don't get it. You are not sure whether you should push on encouraging (which can lead to arguments) or back off completely (but where you that leave you?).

You have given consequences in response to them not doing the right thing, saying "you are not going on your phone or games console if you can't get into school". This leads to arguments and doesn't seem to help (but what else are you supposed to do?).

You have hugged them and gone along with what feels right for them, saying "okay then, tell you what, we won't do that today. We can try again tomorrow". But when tomorrow comes, you are back in the same situation - feeling stuck!

You have let them know they are struggling with anxiety, saying "we know this is anxiety and there are people who can help you if you let them". They tell you they don't want help or say there is no point as no one can help. This leaves you feeling frustrated as you believe things would get better if they could make use of the help that is out there!

You found that despite your best efforts, it got to a point where every day family life was becoming full of tension and arguments. Your teen became increasingly reluctant to go to school, to do school work, to accept invitations from friends and family, to take part on activities such as sports or drama groups. You noticed them making more and more excuses.

Looking back on the years gone by, you thought how much easier things were then. Bruised knees mended with a magic kiss, fallings out with friend's made better with a hug and a chat about what your child could do, warnings about losing access to the TV or tablet helped your child to do the right thing. But now these strategies are no longer working you find yourself at a loss, not knowing what to do to for the best.

You have literally tried everything as a Mum to help you teen to conquer their anxiety. The ways of approaching your child's challenges have worked well in the past, so why don't they work now? Are you doing something wrong.

The answer is no, these really are great ways to support your teen!

When anxiety is present, a different parenting approach is needed.

So where can you find the advice and support you and your teen need to approach anxiety in the best way?

Like any mother, all you want is to see your child thrive to find happiness and fulfillment in life, sadly for your teen anxiety is getting in the way.

You felt some relief when you pinpointed the problem to anxiety. Your GP or child's school may well have recommended that your teen should access counselling or therapy and your teen may have been offered this intervention or be on a waiting list. But any intervention offered to your teen is not helping you to best support them at home.

Your worries about them started to keep you up at night and make it hard to focus on getting things done at work or home. You found yourself becoming distracted thinking about and looking for solutions to help your child. You searched for information, articles and  advice online and have joined a number of forums. You have found there is a lot out there but were not sure how to apply this to your particular situation. You may have started to feel rubbish as a parent, like you were letting your teen down despite making so much effort to help.

Worries about the future started to creep in, concerns about the qualifications they would get, whether they would have enough confidence to get a job, to make a good bunch of friends.

You may have turned to other Mums to ask for advice but found they just didn't get how hard this is on a day-to-day basis. You may have heard suggestions to be tougher, offer more consequences or to be kinder and offer more rewards. You concluded there was not much point continuing to ask for advice off people who didn't understand. You may well have felt judged for your teen's anxiety as we all know the tendency for us to make comparisons to others and to then feel inadequate.

In conclusion you thought it is better to battle on alone!

Let's consider what's holding you and your teen back.

 Young Woman Contemplating

Big Question #1:

Am I doing enough or making it worse?

The trouble is once anxiety takes hold (meaning your teen is doing less and less and becoming more and more worried), your teen starts to feel more and more hopeless about themselves and what is possible and doing more feels increasingly scary.

This can make it really hard for your to help and you can find yourself concerned about why your efforts are not producing results. This worry may combine with another about whether you are unintentionally making the anxiety grow.

It can be such as struggle to find the balance between providing comfort and support while also encouraging your teen to face their fears and build resilience.  Especially when you are doing this on your own! You can find yourself jumping from one way of handling things to another...all while trying to manage you stress.

Once you understand your child's specific struggle with anxiety and access the right support and advice you will be in a much better position to know what you can do to help your teen to get their life back on track.

Big Question #2:

How can I understand what they are going through?

Especially when you teen is not able to let you know what is going on for them.

After years of helping children, teens and families to overcome anxiety here is what I know to be true......

Young people really do want to talk if only they know how.

When you ask your teen why they are not able to go to school or to go out with friends, it is likely they really don't know - anxiety and what it is doing to their life, is as confusing for them as you!

Once you know how to approach your teen, it really is possible to have helpful conversations.

Conversations where:

  • you find out how anxiety feels for your child, what they are thinking and how anxiety is preventing them from going to school, seeing their friends and getting on with their life.

  • your child starts to feel that you get it and understand what is so hard for them.

Once you have these conversations, you are in best position to start helping your child!

Big Question #3:

Is my teen just an anxious person who will always suffer from anxiety?

When nothing is working, it is reasonable to assume, this is just the way it is and the way it will always be.

But I want you to know it is absolutely possible to break free of and reverse the cycle of anxiety now and to build resilience for the future.

Anxiety is a normal human response, but the way we respond to it determines how much it gets in the way of what we want to be doing in our lives.

As a parent you make a real difference to how your teen is responding to their anxiety. It all starts with you accessing the right advice and support so you can learn to parent in a way that is likely to help.

Once you get the right advice and support comfort comes in the knowledge they you know how to best help your teen.

NOW, SLOW YOUR SCROLL FOR A SEC

Imagine what it would be like to receive expert advice and guidance specific to your situation within a community of Mums who share your aspirations, fears and hopes.

The feeling of isolation would be replaced by meaningful relationships with other mothers who share similar experiences, allowing you to share you challenges, triumphs, and lessons learned with those who know what you are facing. This sense of community and understanding would provide ongoing support and encouragement for you to tackle your teens anxiety.

Through gaining specific expert guidance you would feel a new found sense of empowerment and confidence in your ability to support your teen. Valuable knowledge and practical strategies would help you to navigate the complexities of anxiety, helping you to make informed decisions and take proactive steps to create a healthier and more supportive environment for your teen's growth.

You would witness positive changes in your relationship with your anxious teen. Having learned and practiced effective communication strategies, boundary setting techniques, and nurturing practices you could have fostered deeper communication, trust and understanding between you. The entire family would benefit from the your new found knowledge and skills used to create a supportive and nurturing environment for your anxious teen's journey to growth and well-being.

Sounds too good to be true?

It's not.

...I know because I’ve supported many parents to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to help their teens to recover from anxiety problems.

I can’t wait to show YOU how.

What Clients Say:

"I HARDLY SEE HER THESE DAYS, SHE IS OUT AND ABOUT SO MUCH"

"You would not recognise her these days. She still hasn't quite managed a solo bus trip, but I hardly see her these days, she is out and about so much. Shopping, in the park and catching up with friends in coffee shops. Next week she is planning to catch the train to London with a friend. She also went away with the church youth and had an amazing time for 6 days this summer (this time last year she refused to go).

So thank you so much with all your support and help. I am beginning to think we may now be able to push her out of the door and off to university when the time is right!"

Katy, parent

But wait, have we officially met?

Hey, I'm Dr Rebecca Mount!

But please call me Beck. I'm a Mum to three children, a lover of the outdoors and nature (as long as this in done in some level of comfort), holiday maker, fan of good pub grub by a cosy fire and the odd glass of wine.

I'm also a Clinical Psychologist with a passion to help teens overcome mental health struggles with their parents support. My wish is for teens to acquire the skills needed to conquer life challenges; to thrive now and in the years ahead and I believe parents play a really important role in this process.

I qualified as a Clinical Psychologist in 2005 (University of Birmingham). Prior to this, I completed a PhD in Psychology at University College London and in the more distant past, I completed my first degree in Psychology (BSc) from the University of Reading.

For twenty years, I have been practicing as a Clinical Psychologist specialising in working with children and young people . I have worked in child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) for the NHS, Local Authorities and for charities and community interest companies. I am registered with the Health Professions Council (www.hcpc-uk.org) as a practitioner psychologist.

Over the last ten years I have been working in independent practice and this is now my main focus. I continue to offer direct clinical services to children, young people and families from my office in Stourbridge, West Midlands.

As I worked with young people struggling with anxiety and their parents, I noticed that those teens who achieved the best results in terms of recovering from anxiety where those who were closely supported by their parents. I have come to learn that overcoming anxiety on your own can be a tough ask for young people, and so I always involve parents so young people are supported each step of the way on their journey of recovery. When anxiety is around, regular parenting techniques don't work - you need a different approach

Over the last two years, I have developed a approach to parenting specifically tailored for anxiety. The Anxiety-Savvy Parenting Approach. I have heard from many parents about the isolation they feel once anxiety takes a hold in the life of their teen.

My message to all parents is YOU DO NOT HAVE TACKLE TEENS ANXIETY ON YOUR OWN!

PHASE 1

Parenting

knowledge you need to tackle anxiety differently, alongside your teen

To tackle anxiety you need to employ different ways of parenting. Learn how to approach the problems anxiety causes including when how and when to push your child forward or step back and provide comfort.

It is really common for the battle with anxiety to lead to difficulties in your relationship. It is helpful to repair this before you go any further by doing things like:

  • accepting they are doing the best they can

  • empathising with their situation

  • re-connecting by reaching out

  • having positive conversations about anxiety

  • acknowledging you may have made some mistakes

WALK AWAY WITH KNOWLEDGE OF HOW TO APPROACH YOUR TEEN TO FORGE A TEAM AGAINST ANXIETY. YOU WILL HAVE THE FOUNDATION TO GO FORWARD.

module 1 background.png
module 2 background.png

PHASE 2

Perceive

what anxiety is and how it is showing up in your teen's life

It's crucial you know what you are dealing with when it comes to anxiety. This will enable you to start approaching it in a different way, a way where you and your teen call the shots - not anxiety!

At the end of this phase you will:

  • know anxiety is a normal human response

  • see how it comes from our brains survival response

  • understand why usual parenting approaches can make anxiety grow

  • understand different types of anxiety problems

  • know how and why anxiety is impacting on your teen

  • know how severe your teens anxiety is

  • appreciate the way forward to tackle the anxiety in your teen's life

WALK AWAY WITH A PATH TO FOLLOW THAT WILL ENABLE YOUR TEEN TO RECOVER FROM ANXIETY. YOU WILL BE ABLE TO SEE THE WAY AHEAD.

PHASE 3

Personalise

the goals you are going to move towards

Personalise the pathway you and your teen will take to recover from anxiety:

  • Identify three core symptom areas (thoughts, feelings and behaviours)

  • Discover the links between these symptoms

  • Discover and set meaningful goals for recovery (how will you and your teen know when you have got there?)

  • Agree how you are going to work together as a team

WALK AWAY WITH THE GOALS YOU ARE BOTH WORKING TOWARDS. YOU WILL KNOW EXACTLY WHERE YOU ARE HEADED.

PHASE 4

Practice

the skills to tackle anxiety

This is where you learn and put into practice the anxiety management skills.

These skills are organised into my memorable method "NAIL it to WIN":

  • Notice - skills to notice thoughts, feeling and behaviours

  • Accept - acceptance skills that allow you let the feelings and thoughts be there without needing to respond to them

  • Instant - mindfulness and grounding skills to be there in the moment

  • Leap - skills to determine what action to take

  • WIN - skills to carry out What's Important Now - taking steps to move towards goals

These skills will allow your teen to move towards their goals supported in the best way by you.

WALK AWAY WITH SKILLS YOU NEED TO TEACH YOUR TEEN SO THEY CAN REACH THEIR GOALS. YOU WILL KNOW HOW  YOU ARE GOING TO GET THERE.

PHASE 5

Prosper

with a plan for the future

Reflecting on progress made, celebrating how far you have both come on your teen's journey to recover from anxiety and acknowledging what is left to do. Planning for setbacks is an important part of building resilience to anxiety for the future.

This phase includes:

  • Reflecting on what was the most helpful part of the programme.

  • What skills have been the most valuable and what has made the biggest difference.

  • Consider what is left to achieve or what other challanges might you teen like to overcome?

  • Download prompt sheets to complete so that you can come back to and remind self what works in the future.

  • Develop a plan for setbacks.

  • How use the skills learnt to keep conquering life's challenges.

  • Develop a positive plan to keep moving forward.

WALK AWAY WITH CONFIDENCE, OPTIMISM AND JOY THAT YOUR TEEN HAS A PLAN TO KEEP TACKLING ANXIETY IN THE FUTURE. YOU WILL KNOW  YOUR TEEN HAS GOT THIS!

And you will be supported every step of the way with two student-favourite features

THE ANXIOUS TEAM SUPPORTERS CLUB IS A GREAT MATCH FOR YOU IF ....

You are a parent of a child aged 12-16 years.

You have observed your child struggling to do things such as going to school, enjoying time with family and friends and doing hobbies and activities.

You have reached out for help from you GP and have been told the struggles you observe relate to your teen having anxiety. It does not matter what type of anxiety your teen has. The programme is designed to work with a wide range of anxiety problems (see the frequently answered questions section below).

Before problems related to anxiety came along, you would say you had a good relationship with your child.

You believe parents have a key role to play in the lives of teenagers.

You are looking for a way to connect with your teen around this anxiety problem and are open to learning different ways you can support them. To help them to get back to school, spend time with family and friends and enjoy other activities.

You believe all humans deserve to be treated equally and agree to be a part of our inclusive community where everyone is respected

You are committed and willing to learn about and then take the time and action to help your teen practice the skills needed to tackle anxiety.

This isn't the programme for you if

You do not know whether you teen is struggling with anxiety. If you have observed you teen is struggling but have yet to seek any advice, I recommend you visit your GP with your teen so they can advise on the diagnosis and what support is likely to be helpful.

You do not consider, as a parent, you have a vital role to play in your teen's recovery from anxiety.

Your teen has experienced significant trauma in their lives such as emotional, physical or sexual abuse, recent or traumatic separation of parents. The content of the programme is suitable for young people with these needs but they are likely to have additional support needs which are beyond the scope of the programme and so I recommend young people with these experiences access CAMHS to receive support to process and overcome these concerns.

Your teen has significant mental health challenges including disordered eating, self-harming, drugs or alcohol misuse. The content of the programme is suitable for young people with these needs but they are likely to have additional support needs which are beyond the scope of the programme and so I recommend accessing a Children's Mental Health Service (CAMHS) so that issues of risk can be appropriately assessed and managed.

You are looking for direct support for your teen, rather than for yourself as a parent.

Your teen has a diagnosis of a neurodevelopmental disorder such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or an Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The content of the programme is suitable for young people with these needs but they are likely to have additional support needs which are beyond the scope of the programme.

Your teen's anxiety appears specifically related to the loss of a significant person (grief). Teens who are grieving are likely to benefit from direct input specifically targeted towards this issue.

I'VE GOT A'S FOR YOUR Q'S

FAQs:

What kind of anxiety problems does the programme help with?

It is an approach that will work with a wide range of anxiety problems because it is based on tackling the underlying cause of the problem – your teen's cycle of anxiety using a process that is proven to work.

We work together to develop a specific plan for your teen's recovery from their anxiety. I have included an anxiety assessment in the programme so we can get to the bottom of your teen's specific problem.

So whether you teen has a phobia, general anxiety disorder, panic disorder, obsessional and compulsive disorder, health anxiety, social anxiety or separation anxiety - this programme is developed to help. It all starts with understanding your teen's specific problems and this happens in the parenting and perceive phases.

My child won't talk to me about their anxiety, should I still join?

Absolutely.

One of the FIRST things you will do is learn how to approach your teen to have conversations about anxiety and build a positive connection. You learn how to form a team with your teen to support them through their recovery from anxiety.

My child is already receiving input, can I do the programme alongside this?

Yes. This programme will help you as a parent support your teen at home. This is often the missing element in individual support and will allow you to complement this input at home.

What if my child refuses help and support, is there any point joining?

Yes, this is not a programme for young people and so they do not need to take part directly.

The first phase of the programme will teach you how to re-connect with your teen, bring them on side and form a team. This is the foundation of the programme and I will support you to make this happen before you move onto the next phase to start addressing the anxiety problems themselves.

You receive support for a total of six month, a substantial period of time to allow you to reconnect with your teen first and then go with them on their journey of recovery from anxiety.

What kind of time commitment is needed to get results from the programme?

The videos are bite size allowing you to watch them in spare moments.

The investment is then putting the learning into practice as part of a regaining that rewarding relationship with your child s you support them on their journey.

Therefore, you do need to be prepared to invest time to connect with your teen and persevere with this until you form a team together.

My child has been struggling for quite some time does this mean it has gone on for too long to benefit from parent support?

No, the programme is developed to help with mild to moderate anxiety no matter how long it has been around.

The severity of type of anxiety is assessed as part of programme, and so we will develop a good understanding of your teen's struggles before mapping out goals and moving towards these.

My child seems to have some depression alongside anxiety, it is okay for me to take part in the programme.

Yes, it is quite commen for children with anxiety probelms to have difficulty with low mood. This tends to come from thte fact they do less and less and feel  worse and worse about themselves. As you work through the programme you will enable them to identify goals that are important to them and start moving towards these. In my experience the low mood starts to lift as young people start to do more and develop their confidence to do even more.

What if I find out that my child is presenting with risky behaviours as we go through the programme?

The programme is not designed to be able to manage issues of risk that some with self-harming behaviour, eating disorders or drug or alcohol use. If you become aware of these during the course of the programme, it will be necessary for you to contact your GP to access the appropriate level of support. I will be there to available to consider with you the alternative or additional options for support.

Can me and my partner both take part?

Yes. When you join, you will received one log in per family but you can both use this to log in and access the course materials.

It can be helpful if all adults have an appreciation for the approach being taken to recover from anxiety.

In case you're wondering, here's how The Anxious Teen Supporters Club stacks up against other support that's available out there..

Typical support offered to teen and parents for anxiety

(e.g. via CAMHS, school or individual counsellors)

Support targeted towards the young person. May not routinely include support for parents

If parents are included, support tends to be limited sharing particular strategies

Support available at particular appointment times only

Cannot be accessed by young people who do not agree to take part, who refuse help.

If anxiety difficulties return in the future, as a parent you are left to consider a referral to for your child.

Can prove difficult as a parent to directly access advice from the provider of the support as and when required

Can feel isolated as a parent as there is no community provision for parents. It is hard to talk to family and friends if they don't understand

Tends to include one particular approach at a time e.g. CBT

The Anxious Teen Supporters Club

Targeted support for parents is the core component

Forming a team with your teen and building you confidence to work with your teen are core to the programme's success.

Young people access support indirectly through their relationship with their parents

No waiting. Access teaching and support at a time

convenient to you

Weekly Q&A calls provide an opportunity to access a psychologist and get your questions answered when you need them.

Parents are equipped with the skills to support their teens and so are in a position to offer ongoing support if anxiety raises it's head again in the future, without the need to go back for a referral.

Informed by range of psychological evidence based approaches combined to specifically address the symptoms of anxiety

Join a community of parents where you are all working towards the same goal of skilling-up your teen up to tackle anxiety. You are likely to come across similar challenges along the way. Community provides to opportunity for support from these parents so you can learn from each other as well as a psychologist, what works.
